Jindra Morávek Went the Furthest at the European Youth Championships

31/07/2024

On Sunday, July 22, the European Youth Championships concluded in Malmö, Sweden — and it couldn't have ended better for the Czech Republic. Havířov's own Hanka Kodetová successfully defended her singles title and once again stood on the top step of the podium.

And how did our players perform?

As the title of this article suggests, the furthest run among our players in the boys' singles came from Jindřich Morávek. Out of a large field, Jindra advanced past Ukraine's Borshchevskyi and then overcame French national team player Célian Besnier. Unfortunately, he fell short of the round of 16, losing 0:4 to Romania's Andrei Istrate.

His clubmate Vít Kadlec, who also competed in the oldest boys' category, was eliminated one round earlier, in the round of 64. In the second round of the main draw, he lost 0:4 to Italy's Federico Vallina, ending his singles run. He managed to slightly redeem his performance in the doubles, where he partnered with Poland's Rafał Formelam. Together, they lost just short of the quarterfinals to the Ukrainian-Dutch duo Zavada (UKR) and Chambet-Weil (NED).

Our only representative in the girls' category was Helena Sommerová. She played in the junior category and, just like her teammates, made her presence felt. Despite tough competition, she made it into the top 64. There, however, she was defeated by Moldova's Alexandra Chiriacova with a 1:4 scoreline and had to bow out. She fared slightly better in the doubles event, where she partnered with Slovenia's Sara Tokič. They lost in the third round to the Moldovan pair Merencova–Chiriacova, narrowly missing out on a place in the round of 16.

"The atmosphere in the hall wasn't bad. I'm disappointed because I couldn't prepare the way I wanted due to my back pain, which definitely affected my results. I didn't feel confident at all, and it wasn't ideal. I'm really sorry it turned out this way, especially since I played a lot of international tournaments this season and had some good results. Unfortunately, I didn't win a medal at the EYCs, but I hope that will change soon and I'll earn one in the U21 category. Right now, I want to focus on preparing for the new season, staying injury-free, and putting this behind me," commented Helena Sommerová.
